The Southwest Central Region SHRM HR Student Games

The Southwest Central Regional SHRM HR Student Games were held at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque on March 26 and 27, 2010 as part of the Regional student conference.  The state of Utah sent three student teams this year, two from Utah State University and one from Weber State University.  With 15 teams from the Southwest Central Region participating, the HR games were very exciting and one of the most competitive yet.  The teams representing the State of Utah did very well with the teams from Utah State competing against each other for 1st and 2nd place in the finals.  The competition was very intense.  Although the White team led for most of the first half of the game, the blue team finished well and claimed 1st place.  This is the 9th Regional HR Student games in a row that a team from Utah State University has placed 1st.  Congratulations to each of the students who participated in this year’s Southwest Central HR Games.  The State of Utah was well represented by future HR professionals as well as during the HR Student Games.  The winning team from Utah State was:

Utah State University – Blue Team

                                                                                                Lydia Bushman

                                                                                                Brian Francom

                                                                                                Stephen Allred

We would also like to recognize the other teams participating in the Regional games:

Utah State University – White Team

                                                Yvette King

                                                Jacqueline Snyder

                                                Nathan Peterson

Weber State University – Purple Team

                                                Breck Smith

                                                Adam Murray

                                                Cheryl Wolfe

The HR Games are a fun way to motivate and prepare students for PHR (Professional of Human Resources) certification. The HR Games consist of a series of game show style matches, between teams of up to three undergraduate students from colleges and universities. The questions for the matches are divided into categories similar to those used in the PHR certification exam (i.e., Management Practices; Selection & Recruitment; Training & Development; Compensation & Benefits; Employee/Labor Relations; and Health, Safety & Security).

In addition to the student teams and their advisors, we want to thank the many HR professional volunteers who donated their time to help make these games successful.  Thank you for taking time out on a Saturday (an early Saturday morning at that) to help our students compete. Your professionalism and example of volunteerism are a strong influence for good in students’ lives. We could not put on an event like this without all the great volunteers!
